Job summary

Redwood Materials is seeking a Substation Protection and Control Engineer to join our EPC team in California. You will design high voltage AC systems (69kV–345kV) for industrial substations and coordinate with utilities and ISO/RTOs to support interconnection studies.

Ideal candidates bring 10+ years in HV design, strong PSSE/PSLF/PSCAD proficiency, and PE licensure. You will mentor engineers, ensure NEC/IEEE/NFPA compliance, and drive design optimization across projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from ABET accredited program.
• Licensed Professional Engineer in Nevada or eligible; must obtain Nevada and South Carolina PE within 2 months of start date.
• 10+ years of experience in high voltage electrical design, preferably in EPC environments.
• Experience with transmission-level load flow and stability using PSSE/PSLF.
• Experience with electromagnetic transient simulations using PSCAD/EMTC or similar.
• Experience with relay settings using SEL AcSELerator or equivalent.
• Power system modeling using ETAP/SKM or similar.

Responsibilities

• Lead design of high voltage AC electrical systems for industrial substations (69kV–345kV).
• Review existing substations and provide reliability/stability improvements.
• Develop single-line diagrams, layouts, protection and control, and grounding plans.
• Perform grid studies with PSSE/PSLF/PSCAD and similar tools.
• Coordinate interconnection studies with utilities/ISO/RTOs; support permitting.
• Lead R&D on MVDC distribution feasibility for BESS integration.
• Mentor junior engineers and drive design optimization workshops.
