Job summary

South Carolina Department of Corrections seeks a supervisory professional to oversee security personnel and the custody and control of inmates within the unit, reporting to the Housing Lieutenant.

You will supervise performance and appearance, assist with employee evaluations and disciplinary actions, conduct shift briefings, and ensure changes affecting inmates and operations are communicated. OSHA and safety standards must be maintained.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and relevant experience; a bachelor’s degree may substitute for the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.
• Must successfully complete eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the supervision of security personnel and the custody and control of inmates.
• Supervise job performance and appearance of assigned security personnel.
• Assist with employee evaluations, disciplinary action requests, counseling, etc.
• Assist in conducting briefing with officers at the beginning of shift.
• Keep subordinates informed of changes affecting inmates and operations.
• Perform routine inspections of work areas and all security devices and equipment.
• Assist in conducting counts.
• Investigate complaints.
• Perform duties of the Housing Lieutenant in their absence.
• Maintain OSHA and safety standards.
