Job summary

Hackney Council is seeking a senior highway engineer for a six-month contract to lead and deliver highway, active travel, and public realm schemes across the borough. The role requires robust design capabilities, stakeholder engagement and delivery within statutory standards.

You will manage projects from concept through implementation, liaising with residents, contractors and internal teams to ensure value, quality and timely completion.

Qualifications

• Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering.
• Membership of, or eligibility for membership of, a relevant professional institution.
• Demonstrable post-qualification experience in highways, traffic, transport or civil engineering.
• Significant practical experience designing and delivering highways, active travel, traffic management or road safety schemes.
• Strong working knowledge and practical experience using AutoCAD.

Responsibilities

• Lead and/or support the progression of highway and engineering schemes in accordance with programmes agreed with the Principal Engineer.
• Design, manage and implement traffic management, road safety, collision reduction, cycling, bus priority, liveable neighbourhood, school streets, play streets and public realm improvement schemes.
• Develop engineering solutions from initial concept through to detailed design, consultation, approval and implementation.
• Undertake site visits to assess existing highway conditions and accurately capture highway assets for incorporation into design drawings.
• Produce, review and technically appraise engineering drawings using AutoCAD.
• Prepare technical notes, briefing notes, design reports and professional recommendations relating to highway and active travel schemes.
• Review and critique designs, identifying risks, issues and opportunities for improvement and recommending appropriate amendments.
• Produce detailed engineering designs in accordance with current standards, legislation and industry best practice.
