Job summary

Iowa Department of Transportation, Design Bureau, Ames, Iowa, is seeking an Engineering Technician Senior to support preliminary design for 4R, bridge replacement, and other highway improvement projects. You will work under a Professional Engineer, applying engineering design skills and coordinating with multiple teams.

Responsibilities include concept development, cost estimation, and assisting in project reviews, with some in-state travel and a Monday–Friday schedule.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in civil engineering or related field with five years of full-time experience in engineering survey, construction inspection, highway design, materials inspection or testing.
• Alternatively seven years of education and/or experience with 30 semester hours equals one year of experience in civil engineering or related field.
• Current experience in the state executive branch with specified roles and classifications.

Responsibilities

• Utilize CADD skills and understanding of highway project design principles and construction techniques.
• Develop project concepts and influence design decisions with PreDesign Engineer and review teams.
• Communicate and coordinate with DOT bureaus, district staff, and team members.
• Establish alignments, preliminary modeling, and mentor team members while organizing workloads.
• Conduct and facilitate Project Concept meetings and Field Exams with district, FHWA, and local officials.
• Prepare cost estimates and analyze project alternatives.
• Contribute to Interstate system reviews and pavement rehabilitation concepts.
