Job summary

The Iowa Department of Transportation's Design Bureau – Transportation Development Division in Ames seeks a full-time Road 3 Design Transportation Engineer Associate to join a highway design team developing projects that improve state and national transportation systems.

You will perform engineering studies, analyze data, produce highway designs aligned with AASHTO and Iowa DOT guidelines, and collaborate with stakeholders to balance safety, mobility, environmental, and cost considerations.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in civil or transportation engineering.
Engineer in Training (EIT) certification within 24 months.
Professional Engineer licensure within 6 years.
Experience with 3D design and advanced civil engineering software is preferred.

Responsibilities

Conduct engineering studies of transportation system improvements and develop alternatives.
Analyze transportation engineering data to determine the optimal operating characteristics.
Produce highway designs aligned with AASHTO and Iowa DOT design guidance.
Collaborate on a team to balance safety, mobility, environmental impacts, cost, and maintenance.
Perform design and engineering analysis for projects using advanced software, including 3D modeling.
Prepare roadway construction plans clearly conveying all aspects.
