Job summary

Iowa Department of Transportation's Design Bureau – Ames seeks a full-time Road 3 Design Transportation Engineer Associate to advance highway improvement projects with a cross-functional team. The role emphasizes producing designs in line with national and Iowa DOT guidance, including 3D modeling and visualization work.

Ideal candidates will have an engineering degree and pursue EIT or PE licensure within the defined timelines, with strong communication and problem-solving abilities to support

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil, chemical, environmental, materials, mechanics, structural, or transportation engineering or in engineering management.
• Verification of graduation with major coursework in engineering.
• Within 10 months of hire, must graduate with a bachelor’s degree if hired with verification of graduation.
• Engineering in Training (EIT) certification or PE licensure may be required per position.

Responsibilities

• Participate in studies of transportation improvements and develop alternatives.
• Analyze data to determine optimal operating characteristics for highway projects.
• Produce highway designs aligned with AASHTO and Iowa DOT guidance.
• Collaborate with team to balance safety, mobility, environmental and cost factors.
• Perform design and engineering analyses for projects using advanced civil engineering software.
• Prepare roadway construction plans clearly conveying project details.
