Job summary

Jobtailor seeks a seasoned hardware/EDA engineer to lead automotive ECU component design, from datasheet to PCB footprint. You will develop schematic symbols, define pinouts, and land patterns that comply with IPC standards, collaborating with firmware and mechanical teams.

The role emphasizes on‑site PCB/layout work, tool proficiency (Altium, Cadence, Eagle, Mentor Graphics), and mentoring engineers in symbol and footprint creation. Missouri on-site role.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Five (5) years of experience as a Software Engineer, Technical Leader, Practice Leader, or related role.
  • Five years of experience with Automotive Electronic Control Unit (ECU) design and processes; and Electronic components, their specifications, and their interactions within a circuit.
  • Three years of experience with Schematic capture and PCB layout design using industry-standard EDA tools including Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, Eagle, and Mentor Graphics; Hardware in loop simulation systems and testing; and Circuit design and PCB layout including IPC standards.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain the datasheet or technical documentation for the component and its electrical characteristics.
  • Use the EDA tool's symbol editor to create a schematic symbol representing the component's connections and function.
  • Place pins on the symbol, assigning names, numbers, and electrical properties per the datasheet.
  • Create a PCB footprint (land pattern) with pads, sizes, and locations according to the recommended land pattern.
  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive component library including data, symbols, and footprints.
  • Create circuit schematics to represent electrical connections using schematic capture tools.

Job description

  • Obtain the datasheet or technical documentation for the electronic component that needs to be created, including information such as pinout, dimensions, recommended land pattern, and electrical characteristics.
  • Use the EDA tool's symbol editor to create a schematic symbol that represents the component's electrical connections and functionality.
  • Place pins on the symbol and assign appropriate pin names, numbers, and electrical properties based on the component's datasheet.
  • Use the EDA tool's footprint editor to create a PCB footprint (land pattern) for the component, involving defining the pad shapes, sizes, and locations based on the recommended land pattern provided in the component's datasheet such as component package type, pin pitch, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Use EDA tool knowledge and work with provided APIs to create a comprehensive and efficient part request form.
  • Create and maintain a comprehensive electronic component library, including accurate component data, schematic symbols, and PCB footprints.
  • Create circuit schematics using schematic capture tools, such as Mentor Graphics to represent the electrical connections and functionality of the circuit.
  • Develop PCB layouts using software tools like Mentor Graphics PADS, considering factors such as component placement, routing, signal integrity, power distribution, and manufacturability.
  • Ensure that the designed schematics and PCB layouts comply with relevant industry standards, such as IPC standards for PCB design and manufacturing.
  • Train and mentor engineering teams about the tool, symbol, cell and schematic creation.
  • Create and develop hardware components and systems, including circuit boards, processors, and other electronic devices.
  • Identify and resolve issues in hardware designs, including debugging and modifying existing designs to improve performance or address problems.
  • Ensure that designs comply with relevant regulations and standards, such as safety and environmental guidelines.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field of study
  • Five (5) years of experience as a Software Engineer, Technical Leader, Practice Leader, or related role
  • Five years of experience with: Automotive Electronic Control Unit (ECU) design and processes; and Electronic components, their specifications, and their interactions within a circuit
  • Three years of experience with: Schematic capture and PCB layout design using industry-standard EDA tools including Altium Designer, Cadence Allegro, Eagle, and Mentor Graphics; Hardware in loop simulation systems and testing; and Circuit design and PCB layout including IPC standards.
Core Competencies
