Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking an experienced Hardware Design Engineer in the United States (Missouri/Milford) to drive SerDes and Ethernet connectivity within ECU hardware. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams and lead bench testing from bring-up to production readiness.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years in hardware design for automotive electronics, strong schematic/PCB skills, and hands-on lab experience with test equipment. The role emphasizes performance, safety, and reliability.

Qualifications

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or Computer Science.
  • 5+ total years in engineering at OEM, semiconductor supplier, or Tier 1 ECU supplier.
  • 3+ years in electronic hardware design and development.
  • Working knowledge of automotive electronic hardware and software architecture.
  • Strong circuit design, schematic creation, and PCB layout skills.
  • Experience with Mentor Graphics Xpedition and ORCAD.
  • Experience with lab equipment (power supplies, oscilloscopes, signal generators, multimeters).
  • Proven track record leading projects to completion.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate network technologies into ECU designs.
  • Perform detailed hardware analysis including worst-case, signal integrity, and power integrity for SerDes and Ethernet interfaces.
  • Troubleshoot hardware issues and perform root cause analysis across ECUs and connectivity hardware.
  • Conduct design reviews and provide feedback for high-quality, manufacturable designs.
  • Develop hardware requirements and test specs for SerDes/Ethernet connectivity and circuitry.
  • Develop a clear test strategy from component validation to production readiness.
  • Lead bench test execution including bring-up, characterization, and debugging of prototype hardware.
  • Establish domain expertise for semiconductors and ECU product lines in wired connectivity.

Job description

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams within software, mechanical, and manufacturing to ensure successful integration of network technologies into ECU electrical designs.
  • Perform detailed hardware analysis, including worst-case analysis, signal integrity, and power integrity, for SerDes and Ethernet interfaces and related circuitry.
  • Troubleshoot hardware issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement robust, long-term solutions across ECUs and associated connectivity hardware.
  • Conduct design reviews and provide constructive feedback to ensure high-quality, manufacturable designs that meet performance, safety, and reliability targets.
  • Develop hardware requirements and test specifications for SerDes/Ethernet connectivity and supporting circuitry.
  • Develop a clear test strategy covering all aspects of development, from component and board-level validation through system integration and production readiness.
  • Lead bench test execution throughout the development lifecycle, including bring-up, characterization, and debug of prototype and production-intent hardware.
  • Establish domain expertise for semiconductors and ECU product lines within your scope of responsibility, with focus on wired connectivity technology (SerDes and Ethernet PHYs, switches, and related components).
  • Manage technology roadmaps in close collaboration with industry leaders and semiconductor partners to ensure GM’s network hardware solutions remain on the forefront of performance, cost, and scalability.
Requirements
  • BS in Electrical Engineering / Electronics / Computer Science
  • 5+ total years of engineering experience at an OEM, OR at a semiconductor supplier, OR at a Tier 1 ECU supplier
  • 3+ years of engineering experience in electronic hardware design and development
  • Working knowledge of automotive electronic hardware and automotive software architecture
  • Strong proficiency in circuit design, schematic creation, and PCB layout
  • Experience in hardware design tools such as Mentor Graphics Xpedition and ORCAD
  • Experience with lab equipment such as power supplies, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and multimeters
  • Exceptional demonstrated experience leading projects to completion
