Job summary

Umbra is seeking a Senior Ground Software Engineer to join our Remote Sensing software organization. You will help design, build, and maintain critical systems for autonomous satellite operations across mission planning, scheduling, command, control, and communications.

This on-site role can be based in Santa Barbara/Goleta, CA, Arlington, VA, or Reston, VA, with collaboration across product and engineering teams to deliver scalable services.

Qualifications

• BS in CS, software engineering, or related field.
• 5–8+ years building highly available backend services, preferably Python.
• 3+ years designing, developing RESTful APIs.
• Experience in aerospace ground systems or spacecraft operations.
• Understanding of microservices, interfaces, and automated tests.
• 2+ years building CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with relational databases, PostgreSQL.
• Experience deploying Kubernetes/Docker containers.
• Experience with AWS or similar cloud platforms.
• Strong communication across engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain reliable, scalable software for satellite operations.
• Own production services and improve resilience and reliability.
• Contribute to architectural decisions focused on security and maintainability.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver end-to-end solutions.
• Participate in on-call rotations and ensure system uptime and performance.
• Develop APIs, backend services, and data workflows for autonomous operations.
• Improve observability, testing, and deployment processes.
