Job summary

Umbra Lab, Inc. is seeking a Senior Ground Software Engineer to join the Remote Sensing software team. You will own backend services for mission planning, scheduling, command and control, and communications.

The role focuses on building reliable, scalable systems and improving resiliency for autonomous satellite operations. You will collaborate with product owners and cross-functional teams, contribute to architecture, and help deploy containerized services in AWS.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
• 5-8+ years of professional experience developing highly available backend services, preferably using Python.
• 3+ years designing, developing, and testing RESTful APIs.
• Experience in aerospace ground systems, satellite operations, or similar complex environments.
• Understanding of software architecture, event-driven microservices, and automated testing practices.
• 2+ years building automated CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL).
• Experience deploying Kubernetes/Docker containerized services.
• Experience with AWS or other cloud platforms.
• Strong security, access control, and identity management concepts.
• Excellent communication across engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain reliable, scalable software for mission planning, scheduling, command, control, and communications.
• Own production services and improve resilience and delivery speed.
• Contribute to architectural decisions focusing on reliability and security.
• Collaborate with operations, platform engineering, and flight software teams on end-to-end solutions.
• Participate in on-call rotations and ensure system uptime and performance.
• Develop and maintain APIs, backend services, and data workflows for autonomous satellite operations.
• Continuously improve observability, testing, deployment, and operational processes.
