Job summary

Fellow is seeking a Principal Firmware Engineer to own the firmware and connected-system architecture for our kitchen devices. You will design, implement, and review production embedded software, coordinating with hardware, backend, mobile, and cloud teams in a fast-moving, collaborative environment.

This in-office role requires presence in our San Francisco, CA office with a hybrid work schedule. You’ll drive OTA delivery, reliability, security, and long-term maintenance while mentoring

Qualifications

• 8+ years of embedded or firmware engineering experience with ownership of system architecture or technical leadership for production products.
• Expert-level C/C++ development and strong command of RTOS concepts, embedded architecture, memory management, concurrency, interfaces, and performance optimization.
• Experience delivering connected devices from prototype through manufacturing, release, field operation, and long-term maintenance.
• Experience with OTA delivery, validation strategy, and cross-system debugging using real hardware, logs, telemetry, and test data.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience in CS/EE or related field.

Responsibilities

• Own firmware and connected-system architecture across Fellow’s products; define interfaces, standards, roadmaps, and tradeoffs.
• Design, implement, review, and debug production embedded software in C/C++ on RTOS-based systems.
• Lead integration across electronics, device UX, wireless connectivity, mobile apps, MQTT services, REST APIs, and cloud backends.
• Lead OTA architecture, staged rollouts, rollback planning, validation criteria, and release risk communication.
• Diagnose field and production issues using logs, telemetry, analytics, and hardware measurements; coordinate cross-functional response.
• Identify and mitigate safety, reliability, cybersecurity, and certification risks; help maintain secure updates and software lifecycle practices.
• Support factory validation, production debugging, and long-term maintenance of shipped devices.
• Lead design and code reviews; collaborate with hardware, backend, mobile, product, QA, operations, and suppliers.
• Mentor engineers and improve development and release processes, using AI-assisted tools where beneficial.
