Job summary

Fellow, based in San Francisco, seeks a Senior Firmware Engineer to design, develop, and maintain robust firmware for our IoT platform. You will build embedded systems that connect hardware, mobile apps, and cloud services, shaping the on-device experience of our products used by coffee lovers worldwide.

Ideal candidates have deep RTOS experience, shipped connected consumer devices, and a passion for how devices feel and perform.

Qualifications

• 6+ years of experience in embedded firmware development for RTOS and consumer products.
• Deep expertise in FreeRTOS or other RTOS environments; multitasking and scheduling.
• Strong knowledge of ARM Cortex, STM32 and interfaces I2C, SPI, UART.
• Proficiency in C/C++ for embedded systems.
• Experience with on-device GUIs and integrating firmware with mobile apps.
• Strong debugging skills with JTAG, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
• Familiarity with CI/CD and OTA firmware updates.
• Excellent communicator across hardware, software and design teams.
• Scrappy and agile, able to deliver with limited resources.
• Ability to travel up to 10%.

Responsibilities

• Develop embedded firmware using FreeRTOS that powers on-device GUIs, control systems, and connectivity to mobile applications.
• Architect and optimize firmware for resource-constrained environments, focusing on efficiency, low power, and stability.
• Lead firmware development delivering high performance and reliability.
• Partner with product designers, hardware engineers, and app developers to imagine new product experiences and ensure real-time on-device interfaces.
• Drive system optimization for real-time responsiveness and efficient memory use.
• Set and uphold a high reliability bar by testing and debugging firmware with industry-standard tools and meeting performance benchmarks.
• Maintain and improve connectivity between hardware devices, the mobile app, and the cloud backend.
• Champion AI, automation, and new ways of working to improve firmware development, testing, and release.
