Job summary

CDM Smith is seeking a Fire Protection Engineer to design and review fire protection systems for federal and commercial projects. You will develop concepts, perform hydraulic analyses, and ensure compliance with NFPA, UFC, and local codes while collaborating with sales and clients to win proposals.

The role offers a hybrid schedule with offices in multiple cities and opportunities for growth through mentoring and leadership of junior staff.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical, architectural or chemical engineering, or related discipline.
• Professional engineering (PE) license required or equivalent.
• Minimum 7 years of related experience in fire protection engineering.
• Equivalent additional directly related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
• Domestic and/or international travel may be required with varying frequency.

Responsibilities

• Developing comprehensive fire protection engineering designs, including layouts, basis-of-design, hydraulics, and detailed plans for systems.
• Acting as QFPE for federal projects, providing life safety and fire protection analysis and design.
• Reviewing draft designs to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations and signing off on completed designs.
• Creating fire protection and life safety engineering designs and evaluations (eg, egress analysis, fire separation, hazard analysis, water supply).
• Evaluating systems using HydraCAD/HydraCALC or similar software as required.
• Ensuring designs comply with NFPA, UFC, and local regulations; following firm policies.
• Collaborating with sales staff to prepare proposals; reviewing for regulatory and best-practice adherence.
• Meeting with clients to review current and future design needs and perform site assessments.
• Providing technical guidance and mentoring junior staff; may supervise engineers on projects.
