Job summary

Rivian is seeking a Staff Field Service Engineer to provide hands-on technical support for vehicle inspections, warranty matters, and high-priority investigations. You will work at the intersection of field service, diagnostics, engineering, and Legal, traveling ~70% along the East Coast.

This role reports to the Sr. Manager, Field Service Engineering and requires clear documentation and communication across diverse teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Automotive Engineering, or related field.
• 6 years of automotive field service, diagnostics, investigations or related work.
• Hands-on experience diagnosing and troubleshooting EVs and complex vehicle systems.
• Experience writing clear technical reports for internal/external audiences.
• Willingness to travel up to 70% of the time.

Responsibilities

• Conduct and coordinate vehicle inspections in support of warranty, product liability, and incident matters.
• Perform structured vehicle evaluations, including diagnostics, testing, road tests when appropriate, and review of service data.
• Document inspection findings with notes, photos, video, measurements and reports.
• Collaborate with Legal, service, Quality, Engineering and others to define scope and communicate results.
• Develop rapid diagnostic plans for escalated cases to maximize uptime and serviceability.
• Identify safety or technical issues requiring escalation and coordinate response.
• Explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Help improve inspection protocols, training materials, workflows and cross-functional processes.
• Support insurance-related matters as needed.
• Travel to service centers, vehicle locations, inspection sites and other field locations.
