Job summary

Cooley LLP in Reston, Virginia seeks an Associate Director of External Communications for Litigation to lead proactive media relations and reputation-building efforts across the department and firm.

Working with the Director of Communications and firm leadership, you will shape external storytelling, oversee awards submissions, coach leaders, and drive campaigns that showcase Cooley's litigation strengths in business, technology and law sectors.

Qualifications

• Minimum 8 years' direct experience in communications or PR with 4+ years' management experience
• Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Marketing, Business or related field
• Experience leading teams and strategic decisions in fast-paced environments
• Strong written and verbal communication with media
• Crisis and issues management communications experience
• Understanding of digital marketing, social media strategies, and content creation best practices

Responsibilities

• Lead and manage a team of in-house and agency communications professionals
• Develop communications strategies to support business priorities and highlight firm capabilities
• Oversee awards and recognitions programs for the department
• Write and edit press releases, media pitches, talking points and statements
• Develop reporting, policies and resources for external communications
• Shape stories around the department, clients and lawyers in key industries
• Lead external campaigns to position litigation lawyers as authoritative voices
• Serve as spokesperson and primary media contact
• Advise leaders on media strategy and reputation management
• Provide crisis communications counsel and media training
• Develop messaging and responses for communications materials
