Job summary

The Hartford is seeking an experienced Complex Claims Unit Environmental – Claim Specialist to lead the most complex, high‑value environmental claims. You will manage investigations, coordinate litigation, analyze multi‑policy coverages, and negotiate resolutions with expertise in liability and damage assessments.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years in general liability/environmental claims, strong negotiation and communication skills, and a licensed or soon‑to‑be licensed Property & Casualty

Qualifications

• 5+ years general liability claim handling experience with environmental or other latent injury claims or claims under affirmative pollution coverages
• Experience in handling affirmative/defensive risk transfer, including additional insured tenders
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent analytical and critical thinking ability
• Proficiency with MS Office, especially Word and Excel
• Active Property & Casualty State Insurance Adjuster license or ability to obtain licensing within 3 months of hire

Responsibilities

• Manage the most complex, high-value claims with detailed knowledge of the claim and a clear strategy for resolution
• Provide proactive communications to customers and business partners in claims management
• Review and analyze multiple complex policies and coverage parts (GL, umbrella/excess, pollution)
• Write clear, concise and accurate coverage positions
• Conduct investigations regarding claims and/or lawsuits
• Effectively manage litigation and counsel, including litigation planning/budgeting
• Develop and articulate complex coverage, liability and damage assessments
• Provide detailed recommendations to leadership
• Pursue and finalize coverage/liability transfers against other liable parties and insurers
• Conduct complex negotiations and articulate coverage/liability positions
• Attend mediations and trials as necessary
• Manage expenses, reserves and financial transactions
• Maintain up-to-date claims metrics
