Job summary

North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) seeks an experienced Engineer to provide technical leadership on DER integration, IBRs, and grid reliability. You will engage with industry stakeholders, coordinate analyses, and support reliability initiatives across the ERO Enterprise.

The role involves leading studies, performing simulations, and producing reports to advance secure, reliable operation of the North American bulk power system.

Qualifications

• Understanding of DER technology including IBRs such as wind, solar PV, energy storage, hybrids, HVDC, and FACTS or synchronous DERs.
• Root cause analysis of performance issues with mitigations.
• Understanding of power system fundamentals: frequency control, balancing, ramping, voltage control, stability, inverter controls, and BPS operation.
• Familiarity with NERC Reliability Standards related to modeling, operations, and protection.
• General knowledge of transmission planning, protection, and grid operations.
• Willingness to work with diverse industry stakeholders to integrate security into inverter-based resources.
• Ability to lead stakeholder groups in an effective, inclusive manner.
• Excellent written and verbal communication to publish technical reports.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate and lead technical activities for stakeholder groups, e.g., System Planning Impacts of DER Working Group.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to mitigate risks from emerging technologies to DERs and the distribution system.
• Support ERO Enterprise initiatives on DERs, IBRs, and computational loads risk mitigation.
• Contribute to event analysis of System Disturbances and develop reports with findings and recommendations.
• Analyze transmission-level modeling and studies; provide recommendations on modeling issues.
• Lead simulations on BPS-wide reliability issues in near and long term horizons.
• Prepare engineering analyses and reports to support NERC initiatives.
• Travel to meet with stakeholders and participate in industry forums as needed.
• Other duties as assigned.
