Role Summary

Reliability is at the core of Electric Adventure Vehicles. This position is in Tustin, CA, at Rivian’s Engineering and R&D hub. As a Sr. Staff Electrical FA Engineer on the Tustin Failure Analysis team, you will generate insights through conducting failure analysis investigations for all Rivian products from system to component level.

The Sr. Staff Electrical FA Engineer will perform both deep dive and rapid response triage level failure analysis investigations, specializing in electronics, electrical, electromechanical, and energy storage systems within Rivian’s vehicle, adventure, and charging products.

Responsibilities

1. Lead the technical discipline of EE FA, and be the FAME team SME in PCB Failure Analysis.
2. Facilitate and lead failure analysis activities for incidents from reliability testing for new products and fielded systems.
3. Ensure root cause identification at the most detailed level. Drive cross-functional corrective actions.
4. Work closely with FA engineers in Tustin, CA, and Normal, IL, in the FA lab.
5. Collaborate with engineering teams to define requirements for electrical failure analyses, identify deficiencies, and develop/improve manufacturing processes.
6. Maintain dialogue with engineering teams on FA lab capabilities.
7. Mentor and train junior electrical engineers in failure and root cause analysis.
8. Create partnership reports and promote FA services within Rivian.
9. Prepare failure analysis reports with clear explanations and visualizations; present findings to engineering and leadership.
10. Work with testing teams to recreate failure modes using environmental testing equipment.
11. Provide insight into supplier FA investigations and troubleshoot issues at contract manufacturers.
12. Lead executive reviews on critical failure analysis results.

Qualifications

• Required: MSc/PhD in Electrical Engineering with 8+ years relevant experience in EE FA, preferably in automotive, electronics, aerospace, or regulated industries.
• Required: Strong background in testing and analyzing electronic components, PCBAs, and energy storage systems.
• Required: 4+ years experience with Low Voltage PCB Failure Analysis, including failure isolation and analysis techniques.
• Required: Knowledge of electrical testing methods and equipment such as DMMs, oscilloscopes, LCR meters, IR meters, LIT, C-SAM, HiPot testers, curve tracers, TDR, and signal analyzers.
• Required: Extensive experience with high voltage electrical failures in components like power inverters and motors.
• Required: Experience in failure analysis investigations and reporting.
• Desirable: Hands-on experience with lab capabilities like SEM, EDS, FTIR, CT, IR imaging, microprobing, and sample prep.
• Desirable: Familiarity with lithium-ion battery chemistries and failure mechanisms.
• Required: Ability to specify and procure FA equipment; working knowledge of equipment is necessary.

Pay and Benefits

Salary Range: $159,200 - $199,000 (based on experience and location).
