Job summary

Sterling Engineering seeks a Senior Utility Distribution Designer in Chicago, IL to design and develop electric distribution infrastructure, focusing on overhead systems. You will work on pole replacements, DOT projects, and underground improvements, with field visits to verify conditions.

Hybrid work schedule with in-office presence Tue-Thu and remote Mon & Fri; candidate must have 8+ years of experience and a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of electric utility distribution design experience (senior/lead level).
• ComEd project experience is required; 1–2 years acceptable.
• Strong knowledge of overhead distribution design and pole replacement projects.
• Experience preparing design packages, construction documents, and material estimates.
• Familiarity with pole loading, conductor sag, and NESC clearance requirements.
• Experience coordinating with project teams and managing design deliverables.
• Ability to perform field assessments and work independently.
• Valid driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop electric distribution infrastructure, mainly overhead systems.
• Support pole replacement, DOT, and underground distribution projects.
• Prepare construction drawings, layouts, material lists, and cost estimates.
• Conduct field visits to gather data and verify design conditions.
• Coordinate with engineering teams, utility reps, contractors, and stakeholders.
• Assist with permitting, ROW requirements, and project documentation.
• Coordinate project teams and manage design deliverables.
