Job summary

Caterpillar’s Low Voltage Motor and Generator Team in Mossville, IL seeks a Senior Design Engineer to lead mechanical design of motor and generator components for electric drivetrains across Caterpillar machines.

You will drive design reviews, collaborate with cross-functional teams, optimize performance and durability, and advance manufacturing processes while meeting schedule and cost targets.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
• Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
• Experience with CAD/engineering tools and product design processes.

Responsibilities

• Lead the mechanical design and development of motor and generator components and assemblies, balancing performance, durability, cost, manufacturability, and serviceability.
• Apply mechanical design principles including component design, materials selection, thermal-mechanical interfaces, tolerances, and design for manufacturing to create robust electric machine hardware.
• Collaborate with system, electrical, machine, manufacturing, and validation teams to translate product requirements into detailed mechanical component and assembly requirements.
• Lead design analysis and product risk management activities, including FMEA, to identify potential failure modes, mitigate risks, and define verification requirements.
• Drive comprehensive design reviews throughout the product lifecycle using engineering analysis, simulation, prototype builds, testing, and cross-functional input to mature designs and resolve issues.
• Collaborate with manufacturing, suppliers, supply chain, quality, and other engineering teams to implement new designs, processes, and product changes.
• Partner with simulation and validation teams to develop and execute test plans that demonstrate structural integrity, durability, and thermal performance within cost and schedule constraints.
