The Deputy General Counsel at Furman University will be a senior member of the Office of General Counsel and serve as a key advisor to the Vice President and General Counsel. The successful candidate will manage a wide-ranging practice with minimal supervision.

The role includes providing timely legal advice, reviewing and negotiating contracts, guiding policy development, and coordinating litigation and data privacy matters to support Furman’s mission.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an American Bar Association-accredited law school.

Responsibilities

• Provide timely legal advice to university divisions on day-to-day matters.
• Review, draft, and negotiate contracts; develop templates and guidance documents.
• Assist policy makers in drafting policies and advise on legal implications.
• Coordinate litigation and manage discovery for matters and investigations.
• Manage subpoenas, records requests, and data privacy requests with relevant offices.
• Conduct legal research and advise on regulatory issues affecting the university.
• Support and guide Office of General Counsel staff; contribute to operations.
• Serve as designee on committees and institutional matters; handle delegated authority when needed.
• Maintain relationships across the University to support Furman’s mission.
