Job Summary:
The Deputy General Counsel will be a senior member of the Office ofGeneral Counsel and will serve as a key advisor to the VicePresident and General Counsel. The successful candidate must be able to manage a demanding and wide-ranging practice, exercisesound legal and practical judgment, and communicate effectivelywith colleagues and clients. The candidate will be expected tohandle significant and complex matters and transactions frombeginning to end with minimal supervision.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide timely legal advice to university divisions onday-to-day matters pertaining to the operation of the university,including in particular those related to staff employment, tortliability, student issues, athletics, research and sponsoredprograms, and data privacy and security.
- Review, draft, and negotiate contracts on behalf of theUniversity. Develop and maintain legal templates, forms, andguidance documents.
- Assist policy makers in drafting, revising, and implementinginstitutional policies and procedures and provide advice regardingthe legal implications of institutional policies andinitiatives.
- Coordinate litigation and other significant legal matters inconsultation with the Vice President and General Counsel; gatherinformation and manage discovery for litigation and administrativeinvestigations.
- Manage responses to subpoenas, document requests, recordsinquiries, and data privacy requests in coordination with relevantoffices.
- Conduct legal research and provide advice on legal andregulatory issues affecting the university.
- Provide guidance and support to other members of the Office ofGeneral Counsel, as appropriate, and contribute to the effectiveadministration and operation of the office.
- Serve as the Vice President and General Counsel's designee onUniversity committees, working groups, and other institutionalmatters, as appropriate.
- In the absence of the Vice President and General Counsel,exercise such authority and responsibility as may be delegated bythe Vice President and General Counsel.
- Maintain strong relationships across the University to provideaccessible, solutions-oriented counsel that supports Furman'smission and priorities.
- Work on special projects in response to needs as assigned bythe General Counsel and perform duties as required and/or assignedby the VPGC.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an American BarAssociation-accredited law school.
- Licensed to practice law in the State of South Carolina, oreligible for licensure within a reasonable time from the date ofhire.
- A minimum of 5 years of recent experience as a practicingattorney, with substantial proficiency and depth in one or more ofthe following areas: drafting and negotiating sophisticatedagreements, civil litigation, employment, research and sponsoredprograms, Division 1 college athletics, and/or privacy laws.
- A solid working knowledge of the legal, academic, andoperational issues relevant to the operations of a liberal artsinstitution, with willingness to develop new subject matterexpertise as client needs dictate. Experience in a college oruniversity general counsel's office is strongly preferred.
- Strong research and analytical skills, coupled with soundjudgment and the ability to balance legal risks with otherpriorities.
- Capacity to thrive in a collaborative, collegial environmentand work independently with a high degree of motivation.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple, unrelated mattersconcurrently and to perform effectively under the pressure offrequent interruptions, conflicting demands, and changingpriorities.
- Demonstrated ability to identify potential legal issues and thelong-term implications of policy and legal decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to establish relationships with variousconstituencies; work collaboratively to find solutions to verycomplex problems; and to lead and participate in complex projectsrequiring a team approach for resolution.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communicationskills.
- High ethical standards, reflecting honesty, integrity, andreliability.
- Strong client service orientation and skills.
