Job summary

Block, Inc. is seeking an experienced Senior Data Scientist for the First Line Risk Data Science team. You will define control metrics, analyze data to identify risks, and build scalable monitoring across products in a remote, globally distributed environment.

You will apply statistical methods, cohort analyses, and AI tools to improve risk measurement, transparency, and governance across the company’s fintech platforms.

Qualifications

• A bachelor's degree in statistics, data science, economics, CS, or similar quantitative field with 7+ years of relevant experience; or a PhD with 3+ years.
• Advanced proficiency in SQL and Python, including large datasets and maintainable analytical code.
• Strong statistical/analytical judgment with experience in cohort analysis, experimentation, time series, or monitoring.
• Experience translating objectives into measurement frameworks for stakeholders.
• Strong product instincts for internal tools and stakeholder needs.
• Experience in fintech, risk, compliance, or product governance.
• Experience using AI tools to accelerate analysis and develop repeatable work.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL, writing clean, testable code for data science artifacts.
• Experience with Python visualization packages (matplotlib/plotly).
• Experience leveraging LLMs and prompts to accelerate development.
• Experience with data warehousing platforms.

Responsibilities

• Define and maintain actionable control performance metrics and key risk indicators tied to objectives and outcomes.
• Investigate controls using source data and system behavior to measure coverage and outcomes.
• Contribute scalable monitoring metrics and modules into our monitoring application.
• Turn high-value analyses into reusable modules and automated workflows.
• Apply statistical judgment to define populations, baselines, and thresholds.
• Build repeatable solutions for product governance and post-launch monitoring.
• Collaborate with internal users to map workflows, roadmaps, and measure value.
• Communicate findings clearly to technical partners and leaders; contribute reusable methods.
