Job summary

BD in Irvine is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to lead the design and evolution of the data platform powering BD Connected Care's AI initiatives. You will architect scalable pipelines, governance, and models, delivering trusted data to ML engineers and other consumers across the organization.

You will mentor data engineers, collaborate with clinical, product, and engineering teams, and drive data quality, security, and regulatory compliance across the platform.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or related field.
• 7+ years of data engineering experience with end-to-end production pipelines and data models.
• Demonstrated architectural ownership beyond a single team.
• Expert SQL: query authoring, optimization, partitioning, distribution keys, window functions.
• Production experience with a cloud data warehouse at scale and lake integration.
• AWS data services: S3, Glue, Lambda, Step Functions, Athena, and streaming or CDC (Kinesis/MSK/DMS).
• Python proficiency for pipeline code with solid engineering practices.
• Knowledge of data modeling, governance, lineage, and data quality.
• Hands-on feature engineering for ML in collaboration with ML engineers.
• Ability to translate operational/clinical processes into right data inputs.
• HIPAA/PHI handling and security.
• Operational maturity: SLAs, monitoring, on-call, incident response.
• Experience in Agile/Scrum and Confluence.

Responsibilities

• Own the data architecture for AI workflows across warehouse, lake, and serving layers.
• Design and implement ingestion from multiple sources into analytics and ML data layers.
• Design relational and analytical schemas in cloud data warehouse and lake.
• Build reconciled histories across systems with varied cadences.
• Own data quality, data contracts, validation, and governance.
• Define SLAs, runbooks, monitoring, and incident response processes.
• Implement privacy controls and PHI handling per HIPAA and BD policy.
• Mentor data engineers and collaborate with ML engineers on features and datasets.
