Job summary

Hims & Hers is hiring a Principal Data Engineer to set the technical direction for data across our Telehealth, prescription, and wellness products. This role leads platform architecture and streaming decisions that affect millions of patients and defines data contracts between teams.

You will own a modern data stack (GCP BigQuery, Airflow, dbt, Kafka, Databricks) and guide governance, tooling, and security.

Qualifications

• 12+ years building data platform architecture.
• Evidence you’ve set technical direction for organizations you didn’t manage.
• Experience defining the edges of your own architectural authority.
• Deep GCP and BigQuery expertise, plus AWS/ETL ops experience.
• Modern data stack governance across teams, dbt, Airflow, Kafka, and Databricks.
• Terraform or similar IaC, infrastructure as code mindset.

Responsibilities

• Lead multi-year platform architecture spanning ingestion, streaming, orchestration, transformation, and serving as a single system.
• Decide streaming approach (analytics vs production) and establish operational commitments.
• Define interfaces and data contracts between teams and responsible org boundaries.
• Define trust, quality and freshness guarantees, data tiering, and accountability models.
• Shape platform economics including storage, compute strategy, and cost controls.
• Design self-service capabilities with guardrails to avoid production issues.
• Institute testing, CI/CD, observability, and schema governance standards.
• Chair Architecture Review meetings and own cross-team decision rights.
• Manage data governance with HIPAA/PHI considerations and security alignment.
• Produce ADRs/RFCs and ensure decisions are well-documented and referenced.
• Mentor senior engineers and maintain hands-on coding and code reviews.
