Job summary

Provident Bank in New Jersey seeks a Senior Commercial Credit Underwriter to analyze complex credit requests in the C&I region. The role requires deep knowledge of credit risk, underwriting rules, and loan structuring, with the ability to guide loan officers on customer calls.

You will train junior analysts, prepare approvals and annual reviews, and contribute to risk mitigation while supporting a broad commercial lending team across NJ, PA, and NY.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or Economics.
• Minimum 5 years in Commercial credit underwriting.
• Thorough knowledge of underwriting, credit analysis and commercial loan structure.
• Strong analytical skills with ability to identify strengths and mitigate risks.
• Knowledge of commercial real estate lending (investment and owner-occupied).
• Proficient in Commercial & Industrial lending including debt service coverage, cash flow, A/R and A/P, WIP, and Borrowing Base Certificates.
• Strong computer skills, inclusive of MS Word and Excel.
• Strong verbal and written communication.
• Ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines.
• Ability to conduct meetings, present information and respond to questions from peers, auditors and management.
• Sound comprehension of accounting practices, balance sheets, income statements, equity reconciliation, and cash flows.
• Credit underwriting confidence to mentor and train Credit Analyst I & II.

Responsibilities

• Prepare loan approvals, annual reviews and conduct and credit analysis for new requests, including modifications and short-term extensions.
• Prepare and spread business financial statements and cash flows, plus personal financial statements for guarantors; verify covenant compliance.
• Accompany Commercial Loan Officers on customer calls; discuss creditworthiness of proposed loan requests.
• Conduct third-party research, including industry reports and market analyses.
• Prepare reports and handle special assignments as warranted.
• Mentor junior Credit Analysts when required.
