Job summary

South Carolina Department of Corrections seeks a Supervising Officer to oversee housing-unit security, supervising staff and inmate custody under the Shift Lieutenant. Responsibilities include inspections, investigations, counts, evaluations, and reporting.

Qualifications

• High school diploma required; 18 months experience in correctional/security/military/police can substitute.
• Bachelor’s degree may substitute for part of the experience requirement.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.

Responsibilities

• Supervise subordinate security and inmates in housing units under Shift Lieutenant supervision.
• Perform routine inspections for security, safety, and sanitation.
• Conduct investigations of misconduct by inmates or staff.
• Assist in counts and supervise staff performance and evaluations.
• Provide counseling, disciplinary recommendations, and staff training.
• Prepare reports and perform duties of Shift Lieutenant when needed.
• Assigned to Restricted Housing Unit (RHU).
