Job summary

South Carolina Department of Corrections seeks a capable security supervisor to plan, coordinate, and direct security staff within a medium-security facility. You will oversee custody and control of inmates and ensure safety of buildings, property, and personnel.

The role requires supervising staff, performing routine checks for compliance with OSHA standards, supporting inmate counts, and investigating disputes and complaints. Training upon hire is required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and three years experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• One year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in Criminal Justice or related field may substitute for supervisory experience year-for-year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in a medium security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security of all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit to ensure staff perform duties properly, safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmate counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
