Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a security supervisor to plan, coordinate and direct security staff across medium to maximum security units. You will oversee custody and control of inmates and manage security for buildings and public property.

Responsibilities include routine unit inspections, ensuring OSHA compliance, assisting with inmate counts and resolving disputes between inmates and staff.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with relevant experience.
• Three years of correctional/security/military/police work with at least one year supervisory experience.
• Bachelor’s degree may substitute for experience.
• Criminal justice or related degree may substitute supervisory experience year-for-year (associate+ = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in assigned unit(s) of a medium/maximum security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security for all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmates counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
