Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a supervisory officer to plan, coordinate and direct security staff, ensuring custody and control of inmates in medium/maximum security units. You will oversee security of buildings and property, perform routine checks, and enforce OSHA standards.

Eight weeks of basic training upon hire, a high school diploma with relevant experience, and supervisory experience are required; a criminal justice degree may substitute for supervisory

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
• Three years experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, including one year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.

Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate and direct the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in assigned unit(s) of a medium/maximum security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security of all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmate counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
