Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a shift supervisor to oversee housing-unit security staff and supervise inmates. You will conduct inspections, investigations, and counts, and prepare evaluations and reports.

The role requires supervising personnel, counseling, and training, with duties of the Shift Lieutenant as needed. Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma with relevant experience; a bachelor’s degree may substitute for part of the required experience.

Qualifications

• Criminal justice or related degree may substitute for half of the required experience.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the supervision of subordinate security assigned to housing units and control of inmates.
• Perform routine inspections of living areas for security, safety, and sanitation compliance.
• Conduct investigations of alleged misconduct by inmates and security staff.
• Assist in conducting formal and informal counts.
• Supervise performance and conduct of security personnel; prepare evaluations.
• Counsel and train subordinate staff; recommend disciplinary action.
• Prepare reports as needed.
• Perform duties of Shift Lieutenant when necessary.

Education
