Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Corrections seeks a supervisor to direct security staff and oversee inmate custody across assigned units. You will ensure building and property security, perform routine unit checks for safety and cleanliness, and assist with inmate counts.

Responsibilities include investigating inmate complaints and disputes, ensuring OSHA standards are met, and maintaining order within the facilities. Eight weeks of basic training is required on hire.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for 1/2 of required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in assigned units.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security of all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the units to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmate counts for accuracy.
• Investigates inmate complaints and violations; Arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
