Job summary

City of Asheville is seeking an Equipment Operator III in the Public Works Department, Concrete Utility Cut and Maintenance Division, to maintain and improve the city’s infrastructure with emphasis on roads and sidewalks.

Responsibilities include operating a concrete truck and heavy equipment, obtaining a Class A CDL within 90 days, and maintaining safety certifications. The role involves manual labor and coordination with supervisors, with a full-time schedule and occasional overtime.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED with vocational/technical training in heavy equipment operation.
• Two years of heavy equipment operation experience.
• Valid North Carolina Class B CDL with endorsements; Class A CDL within 90 days of hire.
• Flagger and Work Zone Safety certification.
• Ability to learn City/department policies and perform essential functions.

Responsibilities

• Operate a concrete truck and perform associated concrete work.
• Maneuver heavy equipment for digging, grading, loading, and related tasks.
• Operate excavator, track hoe, and backhoe while avoiding utility lines.
• Move materials with loaders and manage weight for safe delivery.
• Use motor graders, scrapers, and excavator blades to grade surfaces.
• Operate bulldozer, scraper, and compactor to finish projects.
• Transport equipment using tractor-trailer rigs and low boys.
• Inspect, maintain, and secure equipment after use; perform light maintenance.
• Assist with manual labor including lifting and unloading materials.
• Follow safety procedures and report incidents; coordinate with supervisors.
