Employment Status: Full-Time
Senior CNC Machinist – Precision Tooling & Die Manufacturing
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior CNC Machinist to join our established manufacturing team. This position is perfect for a professional who thrives on precision engineering, enjoys crafting custom components, and excels at navigating complex manufacturing challenges. You will engage in a diverse range of tasks including CNC programming, precision machining, custom tooling fabrication, Wire EDM, and hands‑on production support. Unlike standard production roles, this position focuses on specialized tooling projects where you will produce unique, one‑off components. Furthermore, you will have the chance to mentor colleagues, collaborate on engineering enhancements, and lead intricate machining projects from start to finish.
Core Responsibilities
- Program, configure, and operate CNC lathes and milling machines to produce precise components.
- Fabricate custom extrusion dies and specialized tooling from raw materials to final completion.
- Utilize Mastercam to generate machining programs for complex, non‑repetitive parts.
- Manage the programming and operation of CNC machinery, specifically TRAK mills and lathes.
- Set up and run Wire EDM equipment, including FANUC systems, to ensure high‑quality output.
- Execute precision finishing and grinding tasks to meet exact surface and tolerance requirements.
- Analyze engineering blueprints, technical specifications, and dimensional data.
- Partner with engineering staff to create effective manufacturing workflows and refine tooling designs.
- Develop and build custom workholding fixtures to optimize machining setups.
- Diagnose tooling complications and perform necessary repairs or adjustments to maintain production flow.
- Use manual lathes and mills for secondary operations, rapid repairs, and modifications.
- Ensure strict dimensional accuracy by utilizing advanced precision inspection tools.
- Assist in the preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of shop floor machinery.
- Oversee the organization of the machine shop, including tooling inventory and equipment maintenance.
- Provide technical mentorship and guidance to junior‑level machinists.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance machining quality, efficiency, and cost‑effectiveness.
- Help maintain a safe, clean, and organized working environment for the entire team.
Our Expectations
- A minimum of 5 years of practical experience in CNC setup and machining.
- Extensive proficiency in operating and programming CNC mills and lathes.
- Demonstrated experience using Mastercam or similar CAM software platforms.
- Proven ability to independently manage complex, one‑off machining assignments.
- Comprehensive knowledge of materials, cutting tools, machining processes, and tight tolerances.
- Expertise in interpreting and applying detailed engineering drawings.
- Proficiency with precision measurement tools like optical comparators, dial indicators, bore gauges, and micrometers.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and a proactive approach to troubleshooting.
- Comfortable transitioning between conventional and CNC machining equipment.
- Capability to resolve manufacturing issues with minimal oversight.
- High level of attention to detail and a commitment to superior quality.
- Effective communication skills to collaborate with production teams, engineers, and fellow machinists.
Beneficial Experience
Candidates with a background in the following areas will be prioritized:
- Wire EDM operation and programming, preferably with FANUC.
- TRAK CNC lathe and mill operation.
- Specialized die manufacturing.
- Extrusion tooling processes.
- Tool and die making.
- Precision surface grinding.
- Design of custom fixtures and workholding.
- Manual turning and milling.
- Precision machining for low‑volume or unique parts.
- Modifications and emergency tooling repairs.
- Silver soldering, brazing, or welding.
- Training or mentoring junior staff.
Education
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Technical training in toolmaking, CNC programming, or machining is highly desirable.
- Practical, hands‑on machining experience is the most critical qualification for this role.
We are looking for a professional who prefers dynamic, complex work over repetitive part loading. The successful candidate will be capable of taking a tooling requirement or engineering print and determining the most effective manufacturing strategy. You must be confident in your ability to program, set up, and troubleshoot, while remaining adaptable enough to address urgent production needs. Experience in creating custom fixtures, dies, or specialist components is highly valued. This role is ideal for a Tool & Die Maker, CNC Programmer, Precision Machinist, or Toolmaker seeking a technically demanding and varied career path.
Work Environment
- Active machine shop and manufacturing facility.
- Frequent operation of conventional and CNC machining equipment.
- Close partnership with production and engineering departments.
- Physical requirements include standing, material handling, and machine operation.
- Dedication to maintaining high quality, precision, and workplace safety standards.
Why Join Us?
- Diverse projects: Focus on creating custom components and specialist tooling rather than repetitive production runs.
- Technical growth: Engage with complex tooling, precision grinding, Wire EDM, and advanced CNC programming.
- Project ownership: Take full responsibility for your work from initial programming to final quality inspection.
- Engineering collaboration: Work alongside engineers to develop practical, high‑quality tooling solutions.
- Leadership potential: Help develop the skills of other machinists through your experience and technical guidance.
- Hands‑on impact: Play a vital role in ensuring production processes and equipment run at peak efficiency.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a seasoned machinist who takes pride in their craft and wishes to apply their expertise to a wide array of challenging engineering and manufacturing projects.
