Trillium Engineering Services is seeking a highly skilledSenior Machinist (Machinist III)with extensive hands-on experience programming, setting up, and machining large, complex components onHorizontal Boring Mills (HBM).
Pay Range:$40.00–$48.00 per hour, depending on experience.This isnot a production CNC operator position. The ideal candidate will have the ability to independently take ownership of custom, one-off, and short-run machining projects fromblueprint interpretation and job planning through CNC programming, custom fixturing, setup, machining, and inspection.
This position offers a high level of technical responsibility and autonomy. The successful candidate will also serve as a technical resource for less experienced machinists and contribute to tooling, cutter selection, fixturing, and process-development decisions.
Important Qualifications
Applicants should have demonstrated experience in most of the following areas:
- CNC programming usingMastercam or similar CAM software
- Setup and operation ofHorizontal Boring Mills
- Large-part and large-weldment machining
- Designing, fabricating, and modifying custom fixtures
- Safe rigging and handling of large components using overhead cranes
- Advanced blueprint reading andGD&T interpretation
- Machining stainless steel and structural/specialty alloys
- Independently managing machining jobs from programming through completion
- Working with minimal supervision in a custom job-shop environment
- Candidates whose experience is primarily limited to running existing CNC programs, operating small vertical mills, or performing high-volume repetitive production work may not be a fit for this position.
Key Responsibilities
CNC Programming & Machining
- Program complex parts using Mastercam or comparable CAM software
- Set up and operate Horizontal Boring Mills
- Machine large, heavy, irregular, and high-value components
- Develop efficient machining strategies for one-off and short-run projects
- Establish machining approaches that account for distortion, deflection, vibration, and thermal movement
- Hold tight tolerances on complex and distortion-prone components
- Perform first-article and in-process inspections
- Troubleshoot machining and dimensional issues as they arise
Custom Fixturing & Job Planning
- Design, fabricate, and modify custom fixtures and workholding
- Plan complete machining setups before cutting material
- Consider load paths, workpiece deflection, thermal movement, accessibility, and rigidity
- Develop solutions for challenging alignment and workholding requirements
- Troubleshoot vibration, access, alignment, and setup challenges
- Provide input on manufacturability and process improvements
Crane & Large-Part Handling
- Safely rig, lift, rotate, and position large components
- Perform complex setups involving overhead crane movement and repositioning
- Understand center of gravity, load limits, rigging requirements, and safe handling practices
- Maintain a strong focus on safety when working with large and high-value components
Technical Leadership
- Serve as a senior technical resource on the shop floor
- Mentor and support less experienced machinists
- Recommend machining approaches, tooling, and best practices
- Assist with cutter, tooling, and fixturing selection
- Provide input regarding specialty tooling and cutters needed for upcoming projects
- Help improve machining processes, setup strategies, and overall shop efficiency
