Job summary

The Hartford is seeking a Manager Claims to lead a specialized Complex Claims Unit (CCU) handling environmental, latent bodily injury, and long-tail liability matters. You will train and coach a team, oversee strategy across coverage and litigation, and drive innovative dispositions while ensuring top-notch customer service.

Ideal candidates have 7+ years in casualty claims, strong negotiation and analytical skills, and experience coordinating with outside counsel and senior stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree preferred; advanced degrees or professional designations are a plus.
• Minimum 7 years of casualty claim experience within a property and casualty organization.
• Experience handling environmental, toxic tort, latent bodily injury, or long-tail liability claims.
• Strong understanding of complex insurance coverage issues.
• Superior negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Prior management experience with staff development and mentoring.
• Ability to influence across functions and with senior stakeholders.
• Proven ability to coach technical claim professionals.
• Strong analytical, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
• Experience coordinating with outside counsel and experts.
• Comfort with data analytics and AI-enabled tools.

Responsibilities

• Train, coach, and develop staff to achieve goals.
• Lead a team handling environmental, toxic tort, asbestos, latent bodily injury claims.
• Provide strategic oversight on coverage, liability, damages, and settlement strategies.
• Drive development and implementation of innovative claim disposition strategies.
• Monitor claim performance, reserving accuracy, and settlement outcomes.
• Evaluate industry developments and jurisdictional changes impacting exposures.
• Partner with Coverage Counsel, Operations, Reinsurance, Underwriting, Actuarial, Product, Risk Control, brokers, and senior leadership.
• Oversee litigation strategy and manage outside counsel and experts.
• Ensure high-quality claim handling and exceptional customer service.
• Build a diverse, high-performing team and foster inclusion.
• Promote continuous improvement using data analytics and AI-enabled tools.
