Job summary

RLI Insurance Company in New York seeks a highly experienced Claim Counsel to advise on coverage and bad faith litigation nationwide. JD required; at least eight years in law practice, preferably with both law firm and insurer experience.

You will supervise outside counsel, review filings, advise the Claim Department on policy language and development, and help train teams. A strong analytical mindset, clear communication, and strategic approach are essential.

Qualifications

• J.D. required and bar admission.
• Minimum 8 years of experience practicing law, ideally at a law firm and insurer.
• Experience handling coverage and bad faith litigation under commercial general liability and/or first-party property policies.
• Experience with additional product lines preferred.
• Experience handling bodily injury and property damage claims; analyzing coverage across multiple US jurisdictions.

Responsibilities

• Provide competent legal advice on claim-related matters and manage coverage and bad faith litigation.
• Manage outside coverage counsel and review filings and discovery responses.
• Achieve optimal results by resolving coverage litigation efficiently.
• Consult with Claim Department on coverage issues and review coverage letters.
• Research and evaluate external coverage decisions across US jurisdictions.
• Provide training and legal advice to the Claim Department on related topics.
• Advise on policy language and product development.
• Support special projects and other duties as needed.
