Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Chicago, IL is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to lead civil design project teams across diverse sectors including power, healthcare, and government. You will guide the design from concept to completion, coordinate with vendors, and manage budgets and schedules.

Responsibilities include preparing specifications, RFQs, bid summaries, change orders, and technical reports; mentoring junior engineers; and ensuring quality and safety standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program, and 7 years civil engineering experience required.
• Or bachelor's degree in civil or related engineering technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 7 years civil engineering experience required.
• Or master's degree in civil engineering and 6 years civil engineering experience required.
• EPC project experience preferred.
• Expert knowledge in standard engineering techniques and procedures.
• Strong computer skills (e.g. AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCAD), and/or hydraulic, hydrologic, pavement, civil analysis programs.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience with leading the discipline design for large projects and delegating work tasks to team members.
• Ability to lead execution of work and resolve issues in a team environment.
• Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.
• Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and specifications.
• Ability to travel.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

Responsibilities

• Lead civil design of projects from conceptual phase through design completion per project manager requirements.
• Prepare civil equipment: packaged equipment and construction specifications and data sheets, RFQ’s, technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.
• Review civil vendor drawings; interface with suppliers, clients and other disciplines.
• Participate in development of project schedule, scope, budget staffing planning and construction planning.
• Responsible for effective management of change orders.
• Quality review production drawings for compliance with project, client and industry standards.
• Quality review construction administration with field personnel to resolve design issues and conduct testing.
• Lead field inspections, installation, measurements or calculations for clients.
• Prepare and present technical reports for clients and industry publications.
• Build relationships with clients and contractors and develop new business opportunities.
• Lead development of cost proposals and qualification statements; manage project budgets and cost estimates.
