Job summary

The City of Reno is seeking an experienced building inspector in the Development Services Department for internal promotion. You will inspect commercial, residential and industrial buildings to enforce codes and ensure safety, with on-site inspections, reports and enforcement actions as required.

Two years of building inspection experience and valid licenses are required; bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply as the city maintains diverse, compliant communities.

Qualifications

• Two years of responsible building inspection, compliance, construction, or enforcement experience.
• Valid driver's license.
• Residential and commercial certificates in electrical, mechanical, building, and plumbing.
• Bilingual candidates encouraged.

Responsibilities

• Inspect and enforce building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, heating and refrigeration codes for permits and licenses; prepare written reports, issue notices to correct violations, stop work notices and testify in court.
• Conduct on-site inspections of existing buildings and new construction to ensure compliance with codes and approved plans.
• Confer with the public, contractors, City departments, engineers and architects; schedule inspections and provide final sign-off approvals.
• Investigate complaints and document violations; review plans for unpermitted work and ensure conformity with standards.
• Assist in resolving disputes between property owners and the City; provide interpretations of codes and ordinances.
• Assess buildings after floods or earthquakes to determine safety and re-occupancy viability.
• Attend professional meetings and stay updated on trends in building inspection and code compliance.
• Respond to public inquiries; manage scheduling and timely case resolution.
• Establish priorities and prepare daily work schedules aligned with construction requirements.
• Perform related duties as required.
