Job summary

The City of Reno is seeking a qualified Building Inspector to enforce building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, heating and refrigeration codes for commercial, residential, and industrial buildings. The inspector will review plans, conduct on-site inspections, issue notices to correct code violations, and testify in court when required.

The position is internal to current classified City of Reno employees and may establish a list for future vacancies.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent with specialized training in building trades and/or code enforcement.
• Two years of responsible building inspection, compliance, construction, or enforcement experience.
• Valid driver's license and dual residential/commercial certifications in electrical, mechanical, building, and plumbing.

Responsibilities

• Inspect and enforce building, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, heating and refrigeration codes for commercial, residential, and industrial buildings; issue notices to correct violations and testify in court as needed.
• Conduct on-site inspections of existing buildings and new construction for compliance with codes and approved plans.
• Consult with the public, contractors, and city departments; schedule inspections and provide final sign-off approvals.
• Investigate complaints, document violations, obtain proper zonings, and review plans for unpermitted work.
• Assist in resolving disputes between property owners and the City; provide interpretations of codes and ordinances.
• Assess buildings after events to determine safety, stability, and re-occupancy suitability; stay updated on industry trends.
