Job summary

City of Reno is seeking an entry‑level Fire Inspector I to train under Fire Prevention leadership and perform fire prevention tasks. The role progresses toward Fire Inspector II after completing the required training program.

Responsibilities include inspecting residential, commercial and mercantile occupancies, reviewing plans, and delivering public safety education. The position emphasizes learning, supervision, and advancement through Reno Fire Department policies.

Qualifications

• Equivalent to graduation of the twelfth grade with specialized training in fire behavior and/or building trades.
• One year of public instruction experience.
• One year in plan checking or life safety systems.
• Two years as a full-time firefighter.
• Four years as a public volunteer firefighter.

Responsibilities

• Conduct fire and life safety inspections of residential, commercial, and mercantile occupancies.
• Assist with inspections prior to business license issuance; identify unsafe practices and make corrective recommendations.
• Investigate fire and life safety hazards; document code violations and propose fixes.
• Evaluate fire alarm systems, extinguishing systems, exiting systems and storage methods.
• Assist in investigation of structure fires; prepare cause reports.
• Deliver lectures and talks on fire safety and inspection procedures.
• Conduct fire drills in schools, hospitals and other public buildings.
• Respond to public inquiries with courteous service and compile data for records.
• Assist in plans examination and review process.
