Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is seeking a responsible-charge engineer to design, evaluate, and detail complex structures and bridges for new construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects.

Lead engineering teams, supervise staff, ensure AASHTO/VDOT compliance, and coordinate with stakeholders, FHWA, and local governments to deliver safe, economical transportation solutions.

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil Engineering with PE license.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with internal and external customers.
• Ability to estimate quantities and costs of materials.
• Ability to interpret construction plans and design specifications and produce structural design plans and notes.
• Ability to manage projects and review and administer consultant design contracts.
• Valid Professional Engineer's license.

Responsibilities

• Prepare bridge and structure designs for new construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects.
• Prepare bridge plans, sketches, and structural drawings.
• Lead and coordinate engineering projects across sections and consultants.
• Provide technical leadership and project management guidance to staff.
• Supervise engineers and technicians; mentor staff.
• Coordinate with management, stakeholders, and FHWA on transportation projects.
