Job summary

The Virginia Department of Transportation seeks a responsible-charge bridge engineer to lead evaluation, design, and rehabilitation of bridges and structures. You will review plans, compute material quantities, and provide construction support to ensure timely completion.

You will manage projects, coordinate with divisions and consultants, prepare scopes of work, schedules, and documentation, and ensure compliance with AASHTO and VDOT standards. Strong communication and leadership are essential.

Qualifications

• Ability to apply civil engineering principles to structural engineering including strength of materials, statics, and structural analysis.
• Ability to estimate quantities and cost of materials.
• Ability to interpret construction plans and design specifications.
• Ability to produce structural design plans and notes.
• Knowledge of AASHTO LRFD standards and related regulations.
• Experience with structural steel design, reinforced concrete, and soil mechanics.

Responsibilities

• Serve as responsible-charge engineer for evaluation, design, and detailing of bridges and structures for new, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects.
• Manage assigned projects to ensure timely and accurate completion.
• Review plans to ensure conformance with AASHTO and VDOT guidelines.
• Lead meetings and coordinate design activities with sections, divisions, and consultants.
• Provide technical guidance and support on bridge construction issues and problems.
