Job summary

State of Washington is seeking a Background Check Specialist 2 within the Background Check Central Unit. You will conduct technical background checks and resolve complex issues under general direction, using specialized knowledge of DSHS background check laws and standards.

The role involves reviewing data from WSP, Courts, FBI, DOC and other sources, determining disqualifications for unsupervised access to vulnerable populations, and disseminating results in compliance with laws.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with two years of forms/records management experience.
• High school diploma or equivalent with six years of forms/records management experience.
• Experience interpreting criminal history information (preferred).
• Experience accessing and interpreting information in justice information systems and regulatory databases.

Responsibilities

• Conduct technical background checks by reviewing names, dates of birth, fingerprints and related data.
• Use specialized software to conduct background checks and match records to persons of interest.
• Assess information from multiple sources (WSP, Courts, FBI, DOC, out-of-state courts, disclosures).
• Determine disqualification for unsupervised access to vulnerable people based on applicable lists.
• Determine the correct background check result type and disseminate records per laws.
• Research Judicial Information System, Superior Court MIS, and DOC records as needed.
• Initiate searches of Western Identification Network states when indicated on fingerprint rap sheets.
• Verify state ID numbers via thumbprint verification with applicants and WASP.
• Process fingerprint errors and doubles; manage records requests and court documents.
• Conduct legal reviews with AG or in-house legal unit.

Education

Bachelor’s degree and two years of experience in forms and/or records management

High school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience in forms and/or records management
