Job summary

Pearson is seeking a senior software engineer and technical leader to own and evolve scalable backend systems and distributed architectures in a cloud-native environment. You will drive end-to-end delivery, modernization, and reliability across teams and geographies.

Expect to mentor engineers, design APIs and microservices, and advocate for best practices in observability and security while maintaining production readiness and high performance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with significant backend systems work.
• Experience as technical lead or senior engineer for complex cross-functional initiatives.
• Deep knowledge of backend concepts: distributed systems, concurrency, scalability, resiliency, and performance.
• Strong programming experience with modern strongly typed languages (Java, Kotlin, Scala, C#, Go, TypeScript).
• Experience with AWS and cloud-native engineering (Lambda, ECS/EKS, API Gateway, SQS/SNS, EventBridge, MSK, Step Functions, DynamoDB, RDS/Aurora).
• Experience with serverless, containerized, microservice-based, and event-driven architectures.
• Experience with relational, NoSQL, graph, and streaming data technologies.
• Proven ability to create architecture diagrams, runbooks, and engineering best-practice guidance.

Responsibilities

• Lead architecture, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support of complex software systems.
• Build scalable backend services and event-driven streaming solutions on AWS.
• Own major engineering initiatives from discovery through production rollout and support.
• Balance new feature delivery with modernization, reliability, and maintenance.
• Mentor engineers and guide cross-functional teams across onshore/offshore sites.
• Produce clear technical documentation and drive AI-assisted engineering adoption where appropriate.
