Job summary

Customer.io is seeking a senior backend engineer to help design and evolve the distributed systems behind a large-scale messaging platform that delivers emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS. You will own end-to-end delivery, architecture, testing, deployment, and monitoring, with a focus on reliability, performance, and scalability in a fully remote setup.

Qualifications

• Seven or more years building scalable distributed systems.
• Experience with Go or a comparable statically typed language.
• Experience in cloud-native environments (AWS or GCP).
• Familiar with relational databases (MySQL) and performance tradeoffs.
• Hands-on with observability tooling and running production systems at scale.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate distributed Go services powering large-scale messaging.
• Own architecture, schema design, testing, deployment, and monitoring end to end.
• Collaborate across teams to debug production issues and deliver reliable solutions.
• Participate in on-call rotation to maintain system reliability.
• Mentor peers and raise engineering standards via knowledge sharing and videos.
• Use AI-assisted tooling to scope and verify multi-file code changes.
