Job summary

Cognizant is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to shape the architecture and delivery of scalable backend services for reporting, data access, processing, and export. You will own roadmaps, drive architectural decisions, and mentor engineers across teams.

The role emphasizes hands-on coding in Java/Spring, REST API design, and cloud/containerized environments, with a focus on security, observability, and reliable services in a remote-friendly setup.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of experience leading backend systems and production operations.
• Strong hands-on Java/Spring and modern backend framework experience with scalable distributed design.
• Ownership of architecture across multiple services, including REST API design and security patterns.
• Relational database expertise: schema design, migrations, performance.
• Experience with cloud platforms (prefer Google Cloud), containerization, and CI/CD pipelines.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical roadmap for backend services supporting reporting, data access, scheduled processing, and export/delivery capabilities.
• Drive and document architectural decisions across interdependent services and data sources while balancing delivery and long-term health.
• Establish and enforce engineering standards for code quality, testing, API design, security, observability, and debt management.
• Translate ambiguous requirements into executable technical plans, review designs and code, and contribute hands-on code for high-risk work.
• Partner with product, QA, engineering teams, and vendors on scope, sequencing, dependencies, platform evaluations, and architecture decisions while mentoring engineers.
