Job summary

Carbon, Inc. seeks a Staff Backend Engineer to own services between our cloud and a global fleet of 3D printers. You will design and build backend systems for provisioning, updates, and telemetry, with emphasis on reliability, Linux fundamentals, and scalable networking.

You will lead major backend initiatives end-to-end, contribute to OS bring-up, and ensure robust cloud-to-device communication even in challenging networks. Strong leadership and communication are essential.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience building and operating production backend services.
• Deep Linux fundamentals: processes, filesystems, networking, systemd, boot/init, package management, users/tools.
• Strong networking: TCP/IP, TLS, DNS, HTTP, WebSockets, NAT, firewall traversal.
• OS provisioning and lifecycle: installing, imaging, updating, rolling back Linux systems.
• Proficient in at least one modern backend language (Python/Go/Node/TypeScript/C++).
• Production mindset: failure modes, observability, upgrade paths; pager experience.

Responsibilities

• Own backend services that manage printer identity, connectivity, provisioning, updates, and telemetry.
• Design and improve the Linux bring-up, in-field OS updates and rollbacks for printers.
• Define protocols and connections between cloud and printers, ensuring reliability in varied networks.
• Lead end-to-end backend initiatives from design to production rollout on real printers.
• Participate in on-call, incident response, postmortems, and drive permanent fixes.
• Mentor engineers and raise the bar through design and code reviews.
