Job summary

Carbon seeks a Staff Backend Engineer to own services bridging our cloud and printer fleet. You will design and build backend systems for provisioning, updates, and telemetry, and shape Linux-based bring-up and in-field updates on hardware.

You will lead end-to-end initiatives, ensure high availability, and mentor engineers while collaborating across backend, infrastructure, and device teams.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of experience building and operating production backend services.
• Deep Linux fundamentals and debugging production Linux problems.
• Strong networking skills: TCP/IP, TLS, DNS, HTTP, WebSockets.
• OS provisioning and lifecycle expertise on Linux devices in the field.
• Expert-level proficiency in Python, Go, Node/TypeScript, or C++.
• Production mindset with observability and pager experience.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Own backend services: identity, connectivity, provisioning, updates, telemetry.
• Design the Linux layer for bring-up, updates, and rollbacks on printers.
• Define cloud-to-device protocols and reliable connectivity across networks.
• Lead end-to-end initiatives from design to rollout on real devices.
• Participate in on-call, incident response, and postmortems.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship across teams.
