Job summary

matcha.fm is seeking a Senior/Staff Backend Engineer to integrate AI-assisted answers into our fast-growing search product. This fully remote role supports a global team and spans Perl, Go and Node.js, with end-to-end ownership from design to production.

You will design, implement, deploy, monitor and iterate on AI-enabled features, mentor engineers, and help shape product and technical tradeoffs for a wide audience.

Qualifications

• 7+ years building backend systems that power a user-facing product.
• Hands-on with AI agent tooling: eval frameworks, RAG pipelines, prompt engineering.
• Strong understanding of complex data structures and algorithms.
• Experience mentoring senior engineers and working in distributed teams.
• Clear written and spoken communication with a focus on user needs and tradeoffs.

Responsibilities

• Build AI-assisted answers into search, from retrieval and prompting to evaluation and rollout.
• Own your work end to end: design, implementation, deployment, monitoring and iteration.
• Work across backend services written in Perl, Go and Node.js.
• Set up evaluation frameworks so changes to models and prompts are measured, not guessed.
• Make product and technical tradeoffs and explain them clearly to the team.
• Mentor senior engineers and raise the bar on how the team builds.
